What is Platinum Food grade silicone?
Silicon, the naturally occurring chemical element that makes up silicone, is the second most abundant element in the earth’s crust, after oxygen. Due to its resiliency, non-porous surface and sustainability, food grade silicone is a product we love to work with.
Unlike plastic, food grade silicone is non toxic, free of BPA, latex, lead, cadmium, phthalates, PVC and harsh chemicals. All things we don’t want in our own mouths, much less a teething baby.
- It’s a sustainable, safer alternative to plastic
- It doesn’t crack, peel, crumble or harden
- It’s non toxic and free of and is odorless
- It’s made from an abundant natural resource
- It’s very resistant to extreme temperatures and doesn’t harbour bacteria
Why we don’t like plastic
We don’t use plastic in our products or our packaging. Plastic that doesn’t end up in a landfill, often makes its way to our lakes and oceans and enters our food chain. Microplastics found in the ocean are huge endocrine disrupters – they impact our overall health and the toxins found in plastic have been linked to immune disorders, hormone imbalance, infertility and cancers.
We are strongly opposed to using any materials that cause this much harm to people, animals and our environment.
Is Food Grade Silicone safe for teething babies?
Yes. It’s free of fillers like BPA and BPA and its non porous surface means it won’t harbour bacteria. It’s SO easy to clean and it’s super soft, buttery texture is much loved by babies and toddlers. We love pairing it with our locally made hard maple rings, for a sustainable, eco friendly toy that your little babes will love.
